I’m sure I am not alone when I sometimes wonder if God is really listening to me when I pray. Yet, if I am to be honest, I also feel the question is somewhat disingenuous because God has shown me multiple times that He is with me, and that all I need to do to increase/maintain my faith is to “keep remembering” all He has done up to this point. God hears us, and He continues to move in mysterious ways “His wonders to perform.” He also shows us that our prayers should not be insular because His instructions to us is that in addition to loving Him with all our hearts, is that we should love each other as we do our selves….
All of this came into play, and I was left in awe on Saturday, October 24, 2026, when I was fortunate enough to be the conduit of a miraculous blessing bestowed upon someone else:
I went to fill my tank at a familiar gas station. The pump attendant was friendly and professional. My gas tank was filled, but he didn’t have enough cash to give me my change so I pulled away from the pump to allow the car behind me to be served by another attendant while the young man dealing with me went inside the service station to get my change from the cashier. He came out a few minutes later and stood at my car door and handed me my cash. We exchanged parting greetings, and I went to complete my usual Saturday morning errands after my early five-mile walk. I had one quick stop to make before I got to my first errand of refilling my drinking water for the week.
I promise that the following details will be applicable in the end:
I turned out of the gas station and unto a minor road. From the minor road, I turned unto another minor road and carefully made another right turn unto a major road. I drove at approximately 68 MPH toward my first quick stop, which occurred after a few turns – one from the major road and unto another and then into the yard I was going to collect something. Because of the space in the yard, I had to make a three-point turn to collect the item and then make my exit out of the yard and back unto the major road. Before I got to that major road, I stopped again at a stop light and then was off again. To get to the water store, I had to brake up at an intersection to carefully make my way unto another major road with a few more turns until I arrived at my destination. I was the first in the parking lot for the water place and a gentle man drove up shortly after I parked my vehicle, which I did by positioning my car, steering the vehicle then straightening out.
I came out with the bottles and stood at the door waiting for them to open. Shortly after, a familiar face – one of the guys who work at the water store – showed up. The three of us greeted each other and stood there. As I stood there looking across at my vehicle, which was parked about 5-7 meters from me, I noted that something was on top of my car to the passenger side and became a tad concerned. Because I couldn’t make it out, I walked over to my car and noted that there was a point-of-sale machine on my vehicle. I was so confused. I called out to my water store friend, who came up and said, “did you go to the gas station before you came here?” I said, “Yes!” For a moment, my visit to the gas station did not occur to me, I think maybe because at no point during that interaction did I encounter a POS machine.
I removed the item from the top of my car and placed it on my front seat with the intention of returning it as soon as I completed my water buying errand. The gas station was approximately three minutes in the opposite direction (no traffic). As we stood there pondering what just happened and being in awe that the machine did not fall despite my journey to the water store, the other customer waiting suggested I call the gas station to report it because whoever left it there must be worried. I agreed as I thought about the pleasant young man who served me. I looked up the number and rang the gas station. I got the supervisor and explained to her what had happened. I very quickly assured her that the machine did not fall and therefore was not damaged. She was grateful as we both acknowledged the good of God.
When I drove up to the gas station, the female attendant who was also there when I first visited and who clearly knew what was happening, retrieved the machine from me and then the guy who served me and inadvertently left the POS machine on top of my car when giving me my change came up to my car window. He said, “thank you so much. You just saved a life.” That touched my heart, not because of what was said, but how he said it. The look in his eyes suggested a few things:
- That he was abundantly grateful that I returned the machine and that it was not damaged.
- That he had other personal things going on
- That he needed the job
I said, “You are welcome, but do not thank me. Thank God. God is real. Do you hear me. God is real. Thank Him.”
“Yes, miss,” he said
As I drove out of the gas station, I was led to call the supervisor, so I immediately did that. I encouraged her to give the worker grace and to not hold it against him. She promised she wouldn’t and once again acknowledged the miraculous intervention of God, which she said she also said to her staff earlier. I went further to explain to her that outside of the event, the young man was very professional in his approach when I was buying gas and that he was a good addition to the service they offer… she agreed.
Imagine if the outcome was different had the machine fallen from my vehicle while making my way at that speed:
- He would have been heavily reprimanded
- He would have been asked to stand the cost of the replacement
- He may have lost his job.
- This would have affected him mentally
BUT GOD!
The more I think about what transpired, I stand in awe of God’s goodness. There is no earthly reason for that machine not to have fallen off my car. I made several stops, turns, and drove at varying speeds before arriving and parking at my destination. I knew it was God. As I thought about this miracle from my perspective, I wondered about what must have been going on in the young man’s mind once he discovered he had placed the machine on top of my car and was curious about his point of view. Did he cry out to God/pray? Did he feel a sense of dread? How did he feel once he learned the machine was safe and being returned. The look on his face and his words (shared earlier) provided some insight.
As I aspire to serve God and operate in daily surrender and obedience to Him, this experience is a reminder that He hears us and that He will show us who He continues to be to us and others.
Just for giggles and shear curiosity, I asked AI about the chances of a POS machine remaining on top of a vehicle, etc., and this is the response:
“No, a standard point-of-sale (POS) machine will almost certainly fly off the top of a vehicle driven at 60 MPH, especially when navigating corners.”
Thank you, Jesus!
